I produce the content as a reporter, not under the direction of the company. All opinions are mine unless noted otherwise.
I’ve reported about Huawei since 2004 when they were still unknown in the West. Paul Reynolds of British Telecom told me they were doing exceptional things. They now are twice the size of any other telecom vendor.
Huawei people are extremely competitive, remarkably hardworking, and very, very good at what they do. “No one is perfect,” the butler said, and neither are any companies this size. On balance, they have been at least as honourable as peers in the West.
I have a major conflict of interest. Huawei and other companies have paid my expenses to events and contracted with the research company I did some work with. I will do my best to do accurate reporting.
Editor’s bias. Like most humans, I have biases. My job is to overcome my bias and get close to the truth. Readers deserve to know my biases.
Huawei has earned my respect but I will print a negative story if I discover one.
China has earned my respect for bringing 400 million people away from the edge of starvation. But I also know how many died in 1959 and 1965, as well as the extreme measures the country is taking against those who disapprove of the government.
Reporters: Please scoop me. I am a slow writer and never catch up. I like to get the stories out. Happy to share files and sources.
Companies press people: Sending me info on stories I’m interested in works far better than press releases.
